Normally, a person has 46 chromosomes grouped into 23 pairs. Any change in this number may lead to the development of various syndromes. One of the most well-known is Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21 — the most common chromosomal abnormality.
However, there are other chromosomal anomalies such as trisomy 13 and 18. These may also be compatible with life but are associated with multiple developmental defects. Such anomalies can sometimes go undetected in biochemical screenings or ultrasound.
That’s why international obstetrics and gynecology organizations recommend the full First Test screening for the 8 most common syndromes. It enables early detection of chromosomal abnormalities during pregnancy and timely medical response.
Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening Results
The report contains a clear and easily interpretable result indicating high or low risk of chromosomal abnormality.
- Low risk. Indicates absence of chromosomal disorders with more than 99% accuracy.
- High risk. Indicates an increased risk of a chromosomal abnormality. All high-risk results must be confirmed by invasive methods (chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis).
- No result. If the fetal DNA fraction is below 3.5%, a repeat test may be required. This is usually due to low fetal DNA levels, which can cause false negatives, typically in patients with a high body mass index.
Indications for Early Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)
It is recommended to undergo a non-invasive prenatal test in the following cases:
- Increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities based on ultrasound and biochemical screening results.
- Maternal age of 35 years or older, and paternal age of 40 years or older.
- Family history of genetic disorders or children with chromosomal abnormalities.
- One or both parents have a diagnosed chromosomal condition.
- Adverse reproductive history (miscarriages, stillbirths, infertility).
- Severe illnesses during pregnancy.
- Pregnancy achieved via IVF.
Since fetal aneuploidies can occur even in women not considered at risk, we recommend NIPT for all pregnant women to ensure peace of mind regarding their baby’s health. The test can also be performed in cases of twin pregnancies.
Contraindications for Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing
NIPT is an effective and safe method for detecting chromosomal abnormalities. This high-tech test has virtually no contraindications. Testing is not recommended in the following cases:
- Triplet or higher-order multiple pregnancies;
- Gestational age of less than 8 weeks.
